About Scooter $400
Scooter is a 7-year-old, 25lb Havanese mix with a clean bill of health. He recently lost his owner and is still adjusting. Scooter is looking for a quiet home where he can be the only dog and soak up all the attention. He would do best with someone who works from home or is home often.
Scooter's adoption profile gets a lot of attention because he's adorable, but underneath his good looks, he's an anxious guy that gets quite overwhelmed in new environments and around new people. It can take him several weeks to fully warm up in a new home. He needs someone who is patient and experienced with skittish dogs like him and will give him the time and space he needs to settle in. The anxiety medication he's on, as well as a few drops of Rescue Remedy that get added to his water every day, are helping a lot.
Affection and playtime are on Scooter's terms, especially in the beginning. But once you've earned his trust, he's a real sweetheart that will follow you around until it's time to snuggle up for the night. He loves to nap and lounge the day away, and although he doesn't require a whole lot of exercise, he does enjoy a couple of daily walks. He also enjoys running zoomies around the yard and roughhousing with his foster mom on the couch. He might be an older pooch, but he still has plenty of energy and will need an adopter that can keep up.
Scooter is a smart boy who's treat-motivated and would benefit greatly from learning a few more commands or tricks to increase his confidence. Like most anxious dogs, he needs a pack leader that is loving but firm, so he doesn't regress in his behavior. He was recently trained to wait in his "spot" until the humans are done eating their meals, then he's rewarded with a yummy treat. He caught on quickly.
He sleeps soundly through the night, preferably next to you, and he'll go potty outside as he's supposed to. With an established routine, accidents are no issue. He gets along fine with friendly dogs but doesn't care to engage much; he prefers to be near his humans. Cats are unknown, but he'd probably just ignore them, too. Since smaller children make him nervous, older dog-savvy kids only, please.
Ideal Home
Scooter would do best in a quiet home where he can be the only dog and receive all the attention. He needs a home where his adopter works from home or is home often. He also needs older, dog-savvy children only due to his nervousness around smaller children.
Ongoing Health
Scooter is currently on anxiety medication and receives Rescue Remedy in his water daily.
Training & Support
Scooter is treat-motivated and would benefit from learning more commands or tricks to build his confidence. He needs a loving but firm pack leader to prevent behavioral regression. He has been successfully trained to wait in his "spot" until mealtime is over, followed by a treat reward. He is reliably potty-trained with an established routine.
