Rye is a smart, energetic, and inquisitive girl with a funny personality who is searching for her forever home as the only animal, so she can soak up all the attention from her humans! Thanks to an incredible donor, Rye's adoption fee is waived for her forever home.
Rye was brought to the DMV Region from a Texas shelter in 2020. She was initially adopted but was returned due to a misunderstanding of her expected size. Unfortunately, Rye then bounced around between foster homes and boarding facilities until a previous rescue planned to euthanize her. Thankfully, she was saved and has been in foster care since 2021, with the rescue working diligently to find her a loving forever home. She is likely a Catahoula or herding breed mix, which explains her intelligence and prey drive.
Ideal Home
Rye would thrive in a home that is excited to go on walks and spend quality time with her. She is a companion who wants to hang with her humans and receive mental stimulation. Due to her prey drive, she would prefer a home without cats. She also guards her items, such as food, toys, and bed, from other dogs, so a home without other dogs is recommended.
Ongoing Health
In late 2021, Rye began experiencing mini-seizures, which can cause her to urinate in her crate. She is currently on a once-daily medication called Keppra, which she takes easily with peanut butter. While the seizures still occasionally happen, the crate urination has significantly decreased, especially when she has more human interaction outside of the crate.
Training & Support
Rye is incredibly smart and learns training quickly. She has excellent recall and leash-walking skills. However, her intelligence means she needs a lot of mental stimulation to stay happy. Activities like people-watching, practicing neutrality in a park, learning tricks, playing on a long-line, tug, fetch, and puzzle toys are all great ways to engage her. She has also been muzzle trained and wears it with style when needed for play. Rye has completed a training program, and her future family will be connected with her trainer for a "Rye 101 Course" and are encouraged to continue her education.
