Almond Joy, or AJ as she's known, is a 2 1/2-year-old, 50-pound Australian Shepherd mix girl who needs a patient and kind hero. She escaped the shelter shortly after arriving in March 2023, and after 10 months on her own, was finally trapped with the help of a dedicated feeder, a shelter volunteer, and the McKamey Animal Center. During this time, she was discovered to be pregnant and went into foster care, where she escaped once more before being rescued from the cold and going on to deliver four healthy puppies. Her puppies were quickly adopted, and AJ has since made incredible progress thanks to the love and determination of our staff and volunteers. She's still a bit "hand shy" and can be a flight risk, but with kindness and patience, she's eager to please and bonds strongly. AJ is brilliant, house-trained, and motivated by cheese. She enjoys being brushed but dislikes having her paws touched. She greets her favorite people with excitement and tail wags, gets along well with other dogs, and doesn't seem to have issues with cats. As a mix of Husky, Aussie, and Border Collie, AJ is a working breed who will require a secure fence, an air tag or tracker, and supervision when outdoors until she has fully bonded. An active adopter who can provide plenty of exercise, enrichment, and a job for her is a must. AJ will be an amazing companion, but she needs time, patience, and love to blossom.
