Meet Benson!
Benson is a gentle five-year-old mixed breed with a soul of loyalty, sensitivity, and quiet devotion. He's a large boy, weighing in at 75 pounds, with a soft cream coat and soulful eyes that hint at his unique lineage of American Pitbull Terrier, German Shepherd, Chow Chow, and other breeds. Benson carries himself with a thoughtful charm, blending an affectionate retriever-like appearance with the intelligence and awareness of his diverse breed mix. He thrives as a constant companion, happiest when he's close to his people, whether on a car ride, lounging by the window, or snuggling in during quiet evenings. Benson is a calm, low-energy companion, content to nap at your side or relax while you go about your day. He knows an impressive list of commands, including "sit," "stay," "come," and helpful focus cues like "leave it" and "look at me," along with sweet ones like "kisses" and "snuggle." His favorite pastimes are low-key, including enrichment games, a good swim, chasing a sturdy ball, and enjoying a favorite chew. Benson may take a few minutes to warm up to new people, but once he connects, he is deeply devoted, incredibly loving, and attentive with impeccable house manners. This intuitive boy is deeply in tune with emotions and forms strong bonds with his caregiver, offering comfort by gently leaning in or curling up beside you when you need it most.
Ideal Home
Benson would thrive in a calm, structured environment with a securely fenced yard that is at least six feet tall, as he has been known to jump fences. He needs a home where he can feel safe, supported, and understood. Due to his sensitive nature and past experiences, Benson is not compatible with cats and requires an adult-only home. He would do best as the only dog in the home, or with a caregiver experienced in providing very structured, gradual introductions with positive reinforcement training.
Ongoing Health
Benson takes a daily medication to manage his allergies and support his emotional balance. He also has a situational calming aid on hand for higher-stress moments, such as grooming, to help him feel comfortable.
Training & Support
Benson walks well overall but can pull on leash, so continued guidance and positive reinforcement training will help him stay focused. He is selective with other dogs and can be reactive with unfamiliar ones, requiring a thoughtful, well-managed environment. He knows "leave it" and engage-and-disengage focus work, and he reliably brings his attention back to his person when another dog passes. In his first weeks in a new home, he does best kept on leash even within the fenced yard and around doorways while he settles in.
