About Maverick
Meet Maverick! Maverick is a sweet, puppy-like boy with a big heart who is looking for a calm and supportive home where he can truly thrive. He knows his basics including sit, paw, and down, and has a great foundation for continued training and bonding. Maverick is very people-oriented and has been great with every person he meets. He enjoys attention and connection, and he will benefit greatly from structure, routine, and ongoing positive reinforcement. Maverick should not go to a household with kids under 12. He is an active boy who needs plenty of enrichment, exercise, and mental stimulation to stay happy and balanced. Continued training classes are strongly recommended to help him build confidence, manners, and focus. Maverick has had limited experience with other dogs and can become unsure or vocal depending on how another dog behaves. Due to fear-based reactivity, he would do best as an only animal in the home, where he can feel secure and supported without added stress. There has been a report from a previous home of him being mouthy when overstimulated, though this has not been observed in our care. As with many young, energetic dogs, learning appropriate outlets and structure will be important for success. Maverick is currently on anxiety medication, as he is struggling in the shelter environment and requires additional support to help him feel safe and regulated - future adopters can ween him off this once he is settled into his new home. He has also tested positive for heartworm and is currently undergoing a slow-kill treatment plan, which will be continued in his adoptive home. All medication and instructions will be provided to adopters. Because of his medical needs, Maverick will require a calm, loving environment where he can rest and recover. He should avoid strenuous exercise and extended time in hot weather during his treatment, but he will still enjoy gentle companionship, enrichment, and plenty of affection. With the right home, Maverick has all the makings of an incredibly loyal and loving companion. He just needs someone willing to give him the structure, patience, and care he needs to shine.
Ideal Home
Maverick would do best in a calm environment without children under 12. He would also do best as the only animal in the home. During his heartworm treatment, he will need a home that can accommodate rest and limited strenuous activity.
Ongoing Health
Maverick is currently on anxiety medication to help him feel more regulated. He is also undergoing a slow-kill treatment plan for heartworm. Future adopters will receive all necessary medication and instructions, and can work with their veterinarian to wean him off anxiety medication once he is settled.
Training & Support
Maverick knows basic commands like sit, paw, and down, and would benefit from continued positive reinforcement training and classes to build confidence and manners. He may have a tendency to be mouthy when overstimulated, so learning appropriate outlets for his energy will be important.
