Merkel is a resilient and loving 3-year-old who has overcome incredible challenges. As a puppy, he survived a gunshot wound that unfortunately left him with paralyzed hind legs. Through the dedication of orthopedic specialists, his legs were amputated, and he now navigates the world with a custom hind end cart, allowing him to enjoy walks. Despite his past, Merkel is incredibly affectionate and loves people. He can be a bit reactive to unfamiliar dogs if they approach too quickly, but is otherwise good with other dogs. He is house-trained but urinates more frequently than average, making quick access to a yard essential. Merkel also wears a belly band overnight to prevent accidents. He thrives on soft, padded surfaces and requires non-slip mats and carpet runners to aid his mobility.
Ideal Home
This special boy needs a home that can accommodate his unique needs. This includes:
- No stairs
- Easy and quick access to a yard for frequent bathroom breaks
- Someone who is home often, or a couple with overlapping schedules
- No small children
- A willingness to allow rescue representatives to conduct twice-yearly wellness checks
- Located within the lower mainland only
- Someone who will diligently care for Merkel's amputation sites, as they touch the ground and could be at risk of injury.
Ongoing Health
Merkel is healthy overall. He urinates more frequently than other dogs, and while infections have been ruled out, this necessitates consistent, easy access to a yard. He will be provided with custom-made protective covers for his hind end to prevent scraping and open wounds, as well as his custom wheels for longer walks.
Training & Support
Merkel is house-trained. His sensitivity to sudden approaches from unknown dogs means he would benefit from continued socialization and gentle introductions. He needs a home that understands his mobility needs and can provide a safe, non-slip environment.
