Meet Mikey - Our Brave Little One-Eyed Warrior!
Mikey is an approximately two-year-old Chihuahua, weighing around 14 pounds. He’s a tiny boy with a story that will absolutely melt your heart. He survived on the streets in Texas before being rescued. During that time, he suffered injuries that sadly resulted in the loss of his left eye. But don’t worry – Mikey doesn’t let having one eye slow him down one bit! It just adds to his charm and makes him even more special.
Ideal Home
Mikey is a cuddle bug who loves to be petted and give little hugs. He truly wants to be close to his people and experience safety and love. He is good with kids and absolutely adores people. He is also okay with other small dogs; he may grumble at first, but he is currently living with other small dogs and does just fine once he adjusts.
Ongoing Health
Mikey is currently heartworm positive, but we are committed to getting him healthy. The rescue will cover his heartworm treatment until he tests negative. He will be retested after one year, and all treatment will be done at Auglaize Animal Hospital in Wapakoneta. Mikey also has IVDD, a spinal condition similar to arthritis, mostly affecting his back and shoulders. He takes gabapentin daily to manage discomfort and does well on his medication.
Training & Support
Mikey’s back can be sensitive due to his IVDD. When picking him up, he must be gently cradled and supported properly. If lifted incorrectly and it hurts, he may give a little nip, not out of meanness, but in self-protection from pain. Once you learn how to hold him correctly, he is perfectly content being scooped up and snuggled. Mikey loves treats, which are the way to his heart! He does pretty well with potty training as long as he’s taken outside frequently and kept on a routine. He is up to date on his vaccinations.
