Abigail is a 6-year-old, 15-16 pound Shih Tzu mix who is spayed and up-to-date on all her vaccines and preventative care. She was rescued from an overcrowded animal control facility after being labeled a "stray," and it's evident she was a victim of a breeder dump, having recently given birth to a litter of puppies. Despite her difficult past, Abigail's sweet disposition and desire to trust humans again are shining through. She has a beautiful coat that requires regular professional grooming every 4-6 weeks, and daily brushing. Abigail's past also means she has unique dietary needs, requiring soft food and no hard chew toys or rawhide. She has undergone dental work, and will need regular dental cleanings every one to two years.
Ideal Home
Abigail would thrive in a quiet, stable environment. She needs a home with adults who have experience with dogs and understand her need for patience and time to build trust. A home where someone works from home or is retired would be ideal, as she craves companionship. She would do best in a quieter neighborhood or rural setting and absolutely cannot be crated. Abigail needs to sleep near her people at night to feel calm and content.
Ongoing Health
Abigail has had extensive dental work due to past trauma and will require annual or bi-annual dental cleanings. She will need to eat soft food and avoid hard chew toys or rawhide. Her medical care needs are ongoing and significant.
Training & Support
Abigail is a smart and quick learner, already knowing "sit," recall, and "stay." She is working on potty training. Abigail requests her own space during mealtimes due to past food insecurities, so she needs a quiet and safe place without competition. Foundational skills training with a certified professional trainer is required for her adoption to build her confidence and ensure a successful transition.
