Wapiti

Meet Wapiti! This handsome 65-pound coonhound/pointer mix, born around January 1, 2024, is a playful and affectionate pup with a personality as striking as his looks. Named after the Shawnee word for "white rump elk," Wapiti, like his namesake, is a graceful jumper and can easily clear a 3-foot gate. He's an active dog who would thrive in a home that enjoys walks, outdoor adventures, and playtime. While he has plenty of energy, he also loves belly rubs and couch cuddles, making him a wonderful balance of activity and affection. Wapiti is a smart boy who is eager to please and already knows how to sit, come, and do his own charming version of "down" which involves a slow slide to the floor. He passed his first visit to doggie daycare with flying colors!

Ideal Home

Wapiti would do best in a home with a fence that is 5 feet or higher due to his jumping ability. He can be an only dog or would get along best with a submissive dog, as he can be a bit alpha with toys and bones. A slow introduction to cats is necessary, and he has a prey drive, so he would need a strong hand on walks as he does like to chase squirrels and rabbits. Like most young pups, Wapiti enjoys chewing, so a good supply of sturdy chew toys and natural chews is a must. While he's not yet a fan of car rides or being crated, his foster family is helping him build confidence.

Wapiti is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.

Training & Support

Wapiti is learning his manners and already knows how to sit, come, and lay down. His foster family is working with him on building confidence with car rides and crating through gentle desensitization.
