About Hazel Doodle

Hazel is a 5-year-old, 65-pound Goldendoodle who came to rescue when her elderly owner sadly passed away. Hazel is initially shy and reserved with new people and other dogs. In her former home, she lived with her former breeding partner, her son Titan, and her daughter. All dogs have since been spayed/neutered. Hazel is currently fostered separately from Titan, as they were not a bonded pair and Titan does better without his mother. Hazel prefers to be with one other dog and mostly with her people. She is incredibly affectionate and cuddly with her foster parents and loves car rides, cuddling, and quiet walks. Hazel has become friends with a submissive female Weimaraner in her foster home and tolerates the male Weimaraner, but she doesn't feel the need to be best friends with every dog she meets. We feel Hazel could do well in an experienced adoptive home with possibly one other dog.

Ideal Home

Hazel would do best in a quieter home without young children or small animals. She prefers a less social environment with minimal visitors, as she is fearful of guests initially and retreats when they arrive. She also thrives with a consistent routine and would do best in a home where she isn't left alone for more than a few hours a day. A home that isn't overly physically active would also be ideal, as Hazel enjoys being a couch potato with her people, though she still benefits from daily walks and enrichment.

Ongoing Health

Hazel has received allergy injections every few months due to itching during blooming seasons in Arizona. She was diagnosed with tooth root resorption, a painful and progressive condition. Hazel has undergone one oral surgery to remove deteriorated teeth and will require annual exams and dental x-rays. In the next few years, she will likely need further surgery to remove the remaining crowns of her teeth as the condition progresses. She can eat normal food but cannot have hard treats, dense chew toys, bones, antlers, or bully sticks.

Training & Support

Hazel exhibits a moderate separation anxiety without structure or routine. With an established routine and a maximum alone time of about four hours, she does very well. She initially barks when left alone but settles. She whines and pulls at clothing when her foster parents return, but with training modifications, this has improved. Hazel is excellent in a large wire crate, where she seeks refuge, eats, and sleeps quietly. She exhibits a strong prey drive for small animals and small dogs.
