About Ace
Ace is a one-year-old pit bull mix with a big heart and an even bigger brain. He's incredibly smart and already knows several tricks, including sit, lay down, shake, knuckles, and high five. Ace loves toys of all kinds and truly enjoys being around other dogs, though he can get a little over the top with his excitement at times. At night, he happily sleeps in bed with his person, and when left alone, he does well both in a crate or loose in the home. Ace's past has shaped him; before coming into his most recent home, he spent much of his early life confined to a basement, missing out on critical socialization and exposure to the world. Since then, he has experienced instability, including multiple moves and time in environments that were not always calm or predictable. Because of this, Ace can be shy and sensitive, especially to loud voices or sudden changes. If startled, he may bark or run toward people, but he has never bitten and has shown no signs of aggression. In new environments, Ace may shut down at first. He tends to move slowly, may freeze or pancake when overwhelmed, and looks for safe, enclosed spaces when he's unsure. But if you give him time, something really beautiful starts to happen. With gentle reassurance, soft voices, and patience, Ace begins to come forward. He seeks out connection, offers small moments of affection, and has already shown that he can settle and find comfort near his person. He responds incredibly well to calm handling and positive reinforcement, and he is tolerant of touch all over his body, even when he's feeling unsure. These are really promising signs for a dog who simply hasn't been given the chance to learn what the world is supposed to feel like. At his core, Ace is not a problem dog. He is a dog who was never shown what safety and consistency feel like. And yet, he is trying. Every single day, he is trying. The small moments, walking forward, accepting touch, laying down beside someone, those are huge for him. He is looking for someone who will see those moments for what they are, and help him keep going.
Ideal Home
Ace would do best in a quiet home with a patient and understanding owner who can go slow and let him build confidence at his own pace. A home without a lot of chaos would help him feel safe. Another well matched dog could be a great outlet for him, given how much he enjoys canine companionship. While he has been around children before, a home with older, respectful kids, or no kids, would likely be best given his sensitivity.
Ongoing Health
Ace has now been neutered upon coming to BENCHS and will need continued routine veterinary care as he settles into his new life.

Ace is incredibly smart and already knows several tricks, including sit, lay down, shake, knuckles, and high five. He responds incredibly well to calm handling and positive reinforcement.
