Dierdre is an approximately 70lb, 8-year-old spayed female German Shepherd mix who is happy, well-mannered, and protective. She's healthy and quite spry for her age. Dierdre underwent surgery in early April to have a large mass removed from her vaginal canal. The mass was benign, and the surgery was completely successful with no post-surgical complications. Dierdre is friendly with strangers both inside and outside the house after introductions. She will bark as they approach initially, but after her people indicate it's safe, she relaxes and greets strangers with a sniff and a wag. She's also happy to let new people pet her and loves the attention. When she's had enough, she simply trots back to her bed.
Ideal Home
Dierdre has done very well with the children she's met, ranging in age from 4-12 years. Her foster caretaker feels she'd be comfortable around even younger children with regular precautions. Dierdre is very apprehensive around other dogs and prefers to keep her distance. She lives peacefully with another dog in her foster home, but would likely do best in a home where she is the only dog. While Dierdre hasn't been around cats since her rescue, she has shown no prey drive towards young chickens, so she might be okay with a dog-savvy cat.
Ongoing Health
Dierdre underwent successful surgery in early April to remove a benign mass from her vaginal canal with no post-surgical complications.
Training & Support
Dierdre is completely housetrained and stays inside when her foster is away. She sleeps in her foster's older daughter's bedroom. Dierdre is generally well-behaved and obedient. She does pull hard on the leash initially and can become reactive when she sees other dogs on walks if they get too close, though she has had limited leash experience due to having a large yard in her foster home. Her foster's teenage daughter can walk her with a prong collar. Dierdre has perfect off-leash recall and will come when called, even from a distance. She likes to play keep-away with her toys and can get mouthy when rough-housing, but she does not bite and will stop when told. She is more of a "lay by your feet" dog and likes to be where her people are to keep watch.
