Juanita, a spirited and resilient girl, was found alone on the side of the road in Puerto Rico, facing significant challenges due to multiple broken bones, likely from a car accident. She bravely underwent extensive surgery with metal implants to stabilize her injuries. Now, she's back on her feet, running and playing with enthusiasm! While her recovery has been remarkable, she's now facing a new condition: a luxating patella in her knee that will require surgical intervention.
Juanita, who also goes by Nita and earned the nickname "Ninja" for her agility, initially arrived as a very skittish dog, almost feral. However, with the dedicated help of a dog trainer and time in a loving foster home, she's made incredible progress. She can now be leashed, walked without resistance, petted, and even picked up. Her intelligence shines through as she quickly understands commands, and her food motivation makes training a joy. She's a food-motivated lover of life, often doing a happy "food dance" and zooming around with boundless energy. She's a constant source of laughter, embodying the spirit of joy despite her past.
Ideal Home
Nita thrives with the company of other dogs and would likely blossom even more with a canine companion or two. She's a tiny dog with a big personality, and while she enjoys being the boss with other dogs, she needs a home that understands her need for space and encouragement to build confidence. She's currently mastering potty pads indoors, showing excellent accuracy, and we're working on transitioning her to outdoor potty breaks. She views her crate as a safe haven but can experience separation anxiety if left alone in it for extended periods.
Ongoing Health
Nita has a luxating patella that will require surgical intervention. She is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped.
Training & Support
Nita is very smart and food-motivated, making her highly trainable. While she has overcome much of her initial fear, patience and continued positive reinforcement will be key to her ongoing adjustment. Her foster-to-adopt period, with guidance from our dog trainer, will be crucial for a smooth transition.
