About -Winston in New England

This sweet and spirited fellow, Winston, is a 10-year-old mixed breed with a zest for life! Originally brought to our attention as a hospice candidate, Winston defied all expectations and has blossomed into a playful and loving companion. He's an active boy who enjoys chasing butterflies, playing with toys, romping in the yard, and, of course, plenty of snuggles. Winston is a smart cookie who knows commands and is eager to learn more, especially when treats are involved. He's a real people-lover and has been friendly with the larger dogs he's met. He enjoys watching the world go by from the window, wagging his tail at passersby. Winston does have a healthy prey drive and was not friendly to cats when he was at the shelter. He can be exuberant during play, so any potential canine housemates should be introduced carefully, and larger, sturdier dogs might be a better fit.

Ideal Home

Winston would thrive in a home where he can continue to enjoy his active lifestyle, with opportunities for walks, yard play, and indoor snuggle sessions. Due to his exuberance during play, he would likely do best with larger dogs or as the sole canine companion, following a successful introduction. His adopter should be prepared to work on his leash skills or provide a securely fenced yard for him to safely explore.

Ongoing Health

Winston has a rare condition called diabetes insipidus, managed with inexpensive daily drops that he doesn't entirely enjoy, but they have successfully prevented any accidents in the house. An ultrasound revealed some abnormalities with his liver and gallbladder, for which he is on supportive medications. He also has a number of benign lumps and bumps, which his vet has deemed not a cause for concern. Winston's eyesight isn't perfect, and he may occasionally miss when grabbing a ball, but he does not chomp down, and any "misses" are purely accidental. He is currently around 70 lbs and has good mobility.

Training & Support

Winston is eager to learn, especially with the motivation of treats! His leash skills are still developing, so patience and consistent training will be beneficial.
