Hi, my name is Gene! I'm a handsome male Shih Tzu mix, about 3 to 5 years old and weighing around 14 lbs. My past was pretty tough; I was rescued from a cruelty case where I lived with over 80 other dogs in very difficult conditions. We didn't have much socialization or love, and many of us were dealing with parasites, fleas, and painful matting. It was a challenging start, but I've been with my rescue for a while and am making wonderful progress in my foster home. I'm naturally timid and shy, and I don't always show my best self right away. It will take patience and a whole lot of love for me to build trust with you, but my foster is already showering me with cuddles, proving that I have so much affection to give once I feel safe. I'm used to being around other dogs, as that was my whole world before, but people are a newer experience for me. I'm looking for a special human to teach me how to love and be loved.

Ideal Home

A home with another dog is a must, as I look to my canine friends to learn the ropes of being part of a family. A fully fenced yard is also required to keep me safe and happy.

Ongoing Health

I was treated for parasites and fleas upon arrival and have been cleared. My fur was also severely matted, but it's growing back nicely.

Training & Support

I am still working on building my confidence around people. I will need continued patience and positive reinforcement to help me grow.
