Diego

Diego is a sweet 2-year-old, 60lb boy who has been through a lot. He was surrendered by his previous owner and ended up in a high-kill shelter in Alabama. Thankfully, a rescue affiliate saved him and brought him to New York. He's fully vetted and currently undergoing heartworm treatment that the rescue is covering. Diego is house-trained and knows basic commands like "sit," "down," "bed," and "go." He's great with adults and children, is very smart, affectionate, loyal, and protective of his people. Diego is learning to trust and be a dog, and he's made great progress, but he'll need a patient adopter.

Ideal Home

Diego has a very high prey drive, so he cannot be placed in a home with cats. He is also a fence-scaling jumper, so a secure fence is extremely important. Due to past experiences, he can get overstimulated and reactive around other animals. He would do best with dogs his own size, and introductions should be slow and careful.

Ongoing Health

Diego tested positive for heartworms and is currently undergoing treatment, which is fully covered by the rescue.

Training & Support

Diego is still learning leash manners, structure, obedience, and trust. He has made significant progress, but he will need an adopter committed to continuing his training with patience and understanding. He has a high prey drive and can be overstimulated around other animals, which may require ongoing management and training.
