Marbles is a comical 7-year-old character who has had a bit of bad luck. Originally from Virginia, he was first brought to us by a rescue whose volunteers adored his striking appearance and beautiful merle colors. While he appears to be an Australian Cattle Dog, his head shape and floppy ears suggest some Lab DNA. After his original owners gave up on him, he found himself in a shelter with limited options, so we invited him to Connecticut. Marbles is a double dose of working dog, meaning he absolutely needs an active lifestyle and a job to do. Herding breeds are hardwired to work, and if not given a task, Marbles will practice his herding skills within the household, which can lead to mayhem if he's bored or frustrated.
Ideal Home
Marbles is best suited for an active adult home with a dog-savvy single or couple who have the time and energy to provide him with daily exercise. He thrives in a tranquil and calm environment; a chaotic or hectic setting can make him anxious and lead to herding behaviors as he tries to maintain social order. In a calm setting, Marbles relaxes and enjoys quiet time with his people. While kids and cats might be too much stimulation for him, he could easily join a multi-dog household with an energy-compatible, well-socialized dog.
Ongoing Health
Marbles is in excellent health. He has been neutered and has had routine health screenings and vaccinations.
Training & Support
Exercise and obedience training are crucial for managing herding breeds like Marbles. He is a high-energy dog who would make a great running, walking, or hiking partner. He needs at least three brisk daily leash walks, in addition to focused playtime. You can increase the intensity of walks by outfitting Marbles with a dog backpack loaded with water and a collapsible bowl, which will make him feel like he has a job and will be quite proud. Obedience training is essential to meeting his needs. Marbles already knows all of his basic commands and has passed many of his Canine Good Citizen tests. Structure and obedience work go a long way in providing him with the mental and physical challenges he needs. Adopters should be prepared to troubleshoot any issues that arise as he transitions to a new environment. Marbles has good house manners and is house and crate trained, though expect a few accidents during his transition to a new routine.
