Max (#Max0175), also known as #EmptyHouseMax, is a young adult male dog who came to us after his owner was hospitalized and would not be returning home. A caretaker locked Max outside of the house, leaving him alone in the yard with no explanation and no one coming back. For days at a time, he went without food. When locals stopped by to feed him, they said he kept trying to get back inside. He did not understand why he was shut out or why the house was empty. When volunteers arrived to bring him to safety, Max refused to leave at first. He paced the yard, growled at the leash, and repeatedly tried to get back inside. Rescuers were able to enter the home and show him that it was vacant. He ran to a bedroom and sat beside an empty bed. After walking through the house and seeing that no one was there, he walked out and got into the car. Max is now in boarding. Once a dog is considered safe, the urgency often fades, but his situation has not changed. He is still without a home. He is around two years old, neutered, and microchipped. After the initial fear wore off, he showed how social and people-focused he is. Boarding staff report that he runs and plays in the yard and actively seeks attention. The hardest part for him is being left behind again. After spending hours building trust with his rescuers, he tried to follow them when they left. Max has lost both of his people in a short period of time. He needs consistency, structure, and a stable environment. He needs someone who will not disappear. We are looking for a foster in the Houston area, even short term, to help us evaluate him in a home setting and give him a break from kennel life. An adopter would be even better. Boarding is not a long-term solution.
