Nico

Nico is a sweet Shih Tzu/Maltese mix who loves companionship, belly rubs, and being close to his people. This happy, affectionate little guy enjoys relaxing in a lap, playing with squeaky toys, and spending time with other dogs. He is happiest when included in daily life and would be content as either a furry sibling or an only dog.

Ideal Home

Nico would do best with patient adopters who can provide regular potty breaks, check-ins every few hours, and plenty of companionship. He is not comfortable around young children and is likely not a good fit for apartment living because he alerts when people pass by. He enjoys other dogs and loves attention, but may be timid in unfamiliar settings and during car rides.

Ongoing Health

Nico weighs 12.7 pounds. He is having a dental procedure and may lose approximately 11 teeth; the estimated cost is about $2,500. He previously had a torn left ACL and partial tear on the right, but follow-up X-rays showed that he was clear of restrictions. He tolerates teeth brushing and takes medicine well with a pill pocket.

Training & Support

Nico is mostly house-trained but may have occasional accidents if he is not taken out frequently. He prefers that his person accompany him outside for potty breaks. He sleeps in a collapsible crate, uses a harness and leash, and is still building confidence with leash walking. He may need help getting onto tall furniture and enjoys positive reinforcement. Nico is easygoing about baths and grooming and loves being pampered.
