Diego is a handsome 2-year-old, 60 lb boy who was surrendered by his previous owner and ended up in a high-kill shelter in Alabama. Thankfully, a rescue affiliate stepped in and saved him. Diego was fully vetted and started on heartworm treatment, as he tested positive. He was then adopted to a home in New York, but sadly, it wasn't the right fit. Diego is a young, active dog who loves to run and play, but his previous adopter was elderly and couldn't provide him with the space or energy he needed. Diego is currently being fostered by his adopter's son while we search for his perfect forever home.
Diego's foster shared that he was initially fearful of toys and struggled with leash walking, suggesting a past of neglect. However, despite his difficult start, Diego is still a loving and affectionate dog who adores people. He is house-trained, knows basic commands like sit, down, and place, and is great with adults and children. Diego is intelligent, eager to learn, loyal, and protective of his people. He is still learning what it means to be a dog and will need a committed adopter who understands that healing from past trauma takes time and patience.
Ideal Home
Diego needs a home where he can have plenty of space to run and play. Due to his high prey drive, he cannot live with cats. He is also a fence-jumper, so a secure, fenced yard is extremely important. He can be overstimulated by other animals, so a home with dogs his size, and slow introductions, would be best.
Ongoing Health
Diego is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, which is covered by the rescue.
Training & Support
Diego is still learning leash manners, structure, obedience, and trust. He will need an adopter who is patient and consistent as he continues to learn and heal.
