About ENZO
Enzo is a handsome, sensitive 3-year-old boy who is looking for a special family to help him gain confidence. He originally came to the shelter as a stray and was quickly adopted as a puppy. He reportedly did well with cats in that home and has now found himself back with us. Enzo can be fearful and undersocialized, and it takes him time to warm up to new people. He needs someone patient and willing to let him open up at his own pace. Enzo shares his kennel with another dog and has been independent and tolerant when meeting other dogs in playgroup.
Ideal Home
Enzo needs a patient and understanding home that will allow him to build confidence at his own pace. He has a history of resource guarding food, toys, and resting spaces, and caution is advised when interacting with his valued items. Enzo may also exhibit stranger danger, reacting with barking, snapping, or fleeing when encountering new people. He can be selective with men and has a history of lunging. He may also growl at children. A home where children are never left alone with him and are taught to interact calmly and respectfully is essential.
Ongoing Health
Enzo has an undocumented bite history where no skin was broken to an owner's roommate.
Training & Support
Enzo resource guards food from people and may guard other valued items. Do not attempt to take items directly from his mouth or reach into his food bowl; instead, trade with a high-value treat or toy. Feed him separately from other pets in a quiet, low-traffic area and allow him to eat undisturbed. Muzzle training is recommended for practicing safe management. Recognize warning signals like stiffening, hovering, growling, or showing teeth, and calmly create distance.
Enzo requires a dog introduction and previous owners reported issues with other dogs. Introductions must be gradual and carefully managed in neutral territory. Muzzle training is recommended before introductions, and Enzo should not attend dog parks or uncontrolled environments.
Enzo needs a proper cat introduction as he has a history of chasing cats. Keep him separated from resident cats for a minimum of two weeks to allow decompression and scent acclimation. Never rush introductions; gradual exposure through scent swapping, barrier greetings, and calm observation is essential. Muzzle training is highly recommended prior to in-person introductions.
Children require supervision, and roughhousing, grabbing, hugging, or sudden movements should be avoided. Provide Enzo with a safe space where he can retreat when he needs space. A dragline is recommended for at least two weeks when children are present.
Enzo prefers to choose his own human friends and may not be comfortable with everyone. Keep initial introductions calm, controlled, and brief, and encourage visitors to avoid direct eye contact or reaching towards him until trust is built. Muzzle training is recommended for new introductions. Keep him securely separated when unfamiliar people are present, especially if he shows signs of discomfort. Attentiveness to his body language, including lip lifting, showing teeth, low growling, avoidance, or stiff posture, is crucial.
Enzo may experience separation anxiety. Proper crate training can provide a safe space and help prevent destructive behaviors. Provide mental stimulation and consider background noise like calming music or television. Practice short departures to build his comfort level with being alone.
