Hippo is an 87-pound Bull Mastiff mix who is neutered and looking for a loving home! He was rescued by TAP from the Riverside shelter and is so grateful for a second chance. Hippo is a sweet and cuddly boy who adores affection and snuggling with his people. He is good with kids of all ages, including toddlers. He has picked up bathroom manners and is working on leash manners. Hippo enjoys tug-of-war, long night walks, and hanging out in the kitchen. He may bark at people passing by when inside, but is generally a calm observer when outside.
Ideal Home
Hippo would love a family who will love him and play with him! He will do best as an only dog. A home in a quiet neighborhood with a securely fenced backyard would be ideal for him to play and explore safely. He is adaptable and would be happy in an apartment with a couple of walks a day, but a family that isn't gone for long hours would be best. While he is good with children, he playfully bites ankles and wrists, so a family with older kids or adults might be a better fit.
Ongoing Health
Hippo takes Prozac (fluoxetine) daily to help manage his moderate separation anxiety. This medication costs approximately $5.00 per month, depending on the pharmacy and market value.
Training & Support
Hippo is good with bathroom and leash training but is working on leash reactivity, where he pulls and lunges when he sees another dog. He needs a strong handler and patient training to help him overcome this. He has moderate separation anxiety but settles down in his crate after 20-30 minutes when left alone. He thrives with routine and structure to help manage his anxiety.
