Meet Major, a sweet, toy-hoarding hippo who is ready to trade his shelter stress for a cozy couch! Major is a big, goofy boy who, like many of us, thrives in a calm environment. While the shelter's hustle and bustle proved too much for him, causing some barrier reactivity with other dogs and a bit of nippy behavior with handlers, he absolutely blossomed when placed in a loving foster home. In fact, his foster parents report zero negative behaviors at home – it turns out all he needed was a little peace and quiet to reveal his true, loving nature! Major is housebroken, crate-trained, and has a hilarious, snorty breathing style that sounds just like a land hippopotamus. He also has a passion for toys and will happily hoard them like a dragon guarding its treasure!
Ideal Home
Major needs a home that can accommodate his specific needs. He must be the only pet in the household due to his high excitability. Additionally, a home without small children is a must, as Major can be a bit of a wrecking ball when excited and doesn't quite grasp his own size and strength. Due to some breathing limitations, similar to an English Bulldog, Major is sensitive to heat and can overheat quickly when temperatures reach around 75°F. Outdoor activities and walks will need to be brief and limited to cooler times of the day.
Ongoing Health
Major has some breathing limitations and is sensitive to heat, requiring his outdoor activities to be limited during warmer weather.
Training & Support
Major is doing wonderfully in his foster home, but his transition to a new forever home will require continued structure, training, and managed socialization to ensure his continued success.
