Thanks for your interest in our Great Pyrenees puppies! These puppies have an appointment June 17 for a well visit. We will begin matching adopters with the puppies after this visit. Both males and females are available.
Great Pyrenees frequently show up in shelters because many people are unaware of the breed's specific needs. It is our mission to find great homes for each one, where they will live a happy, life-long life.
WORKING DOGS
If you're interested in adopting a Great Pyrenees as a livestock guardian dog, it is essential that your property have adequate fencing. Our adoption contract REQUIRES that all adopted puppies be spayed or neutered; therefore, these dogs are NOT to be used for breeding.
PETS
For those wishing to have a Great Pyrenees as a pet, please keep in mind that training these dogs differs from that of the average dog. They MUST be socialized as puppies and are known for their independent and sometimes stubborn nature.
Key Breed Characteristics:
- Size & Lifespan: Males typically stand 27-32 inches tall and weigh 100 to over 160 lbs, while females range from 25-29 inches and weigh 85-115 lbs. They have a lifespan of 10-12 years.
- Temperament: Known for a "zen-like" calm indoors, they are incredibly patient and gentle with their families. However, they are alert, nocturnal guardians who will actively patrol and bark at perceived threats.
- Appearance: They have a weather-resistant double coat that is usually pure white or features markings of gray, tan, or badger.
Care & Lifestyle Requirements:
- Space & Containment: Because of their roaming instinct and guardian background, they are not ideal apartment dogs. They require a large, securely fenced yard (preferably 5 feet or higher) to accommodate their patrolling duties.
- Training: They are independent thinkers and not easily obedience-trained like some other breeds. Consistent, positive reinforcement and early socialization are critical.
- Grooming: Their lush coats require regular brushing to prevent mats, and they "blow" (heavily shed) their undercoats twice a year.
If you're willing to commit to proper training, spaying/neutering, and have adequate fencing, we welcome you to complete an application.
