George is a handsome 2-year-old Liver, Tricolor, and White Field-bred English Setter who is looking for his forever home. He was sadly surrendered after living most of his life in an outdoor pen, which led to neglect including heartworm and Lyme disease. George has come a long way in his foster home, transforming from a frightened pup to a sweet and loving companion. He enjoys playing with his foster sisters, "hunting" squirrels and birds in the yard, and absolutely adores receiving attention, especially through petting and brushing. George is 100% cat-safe and has shown great compatibility with other dogs, including senior dogs.
Ideal Home
George would thrive in a home with a single lady or a pair of ladies who can give him the time and patience he needs to build trust. A home with a playful, sweet female dog would be a bonus! He needs a home with a privacy fence or a fence with vertical bars, similar to what has worked well for his sister. Due to his past experiences, he can become overly excited by people walking by the house, delivery vehicles, and the sound of garbage trucks, and can be fearful of flashlights. He also needs a home that can provide a safe, enclosed space for him, like a cage, which he currently views as his safe place.
Ongoing Health
George has been diagnosed with heartworm and Lyme disease. He is currently undergoing slow-kill heartworm treatment and has tested negative as of February 2024. Lyme disease is not curable, so he will require annual testing and periodic antibiotic therapy throughout his life. He has started heartworm treatment and is feeling better, and we anticipate his sweet personality will continue to blossom as he recovers. He was underweight upon arrival and is working towards a healthy weight. He will need to be treated for at least a month before he can be neutered.
Training & Support
George will need continued work on crate training and house training. He can get overly excited by external stimuli, so a patient approach to managing his reactions to passersby, delivery vehicles, and loud noises will be beneficial.
