Riley is an approximately 5-year-old, neutered male German Shepherd Dog who is confident, playful, and trainable. He is healthy, up-to-date on core vaccinations, and microchipped. Riley bonds quickly with his people and is very affectionate. He can be a little hand-shy initially, but this resolves quickly once trust is established. Riley is fairly protective of his people, especially when on leash. He is good meeting strangers with a proper introduction and no sudden movements.
Ideal Home
Riley's neck and hindquarters are very sensitive, and he has snapped at individuals who have reached for his neck. This sensitivity is likely due to past rough handling, possibly involving his collar. While he is sensitive to being grabbed around his neck, he allows a leash to be attached without issue. Riley has not been around children since his rescue in early August, but would likely be okay with children over twelve years old. Due to his sensitivity around his neck and hindquarters, a home without younger children is recommended. Riley is very good with other dogs, generally mellow and keeping to himself. He currently lives with a young male Pitbull/Boxer mix and a female Rottweiler and does well with them. He shows no particular interest in small dogs he encounters on walks, so he might be okay with them. Riley is likely not good with cats, as he has displayed prey drive when seeing them on walks. We prefer that Riley’s adopter(s) have experience with dogs who have experienced abuse, given his sensitivities.

Training & Support
Riley is house-trained but has not been left outside of his crate when his foster parents are both away, to ensure safety with their other dogs. He may counter-surf if food is left within reach. Riley is also crated at night. He is a quick learner and very food-motivated, which aids in training. He walks well on a loose leash and is non-reactive to other dogs on walks. His off-leash recall from short distances has been good so far. Riley will benefit from continued training and exposure to new environments.
