About Odie

Hi, I'm Odie! I'm a 4-year-old, 65-pound black Rottweiler mix with a heart full of love and a past that's made me a little shy. I was found as a tiny puppy with my siblings, and while they all found homes, I stayed with the person who loved me most. That early start gave me some big feelings of anxiety and fear, but I'm working hard every day to overcome them. I'm neutered, house-trained, and on medication to help me feel calmer. I might be nervous when we first meet, but once I know you, I'll be your most loyal companion. I've been gentle and sweet with my family's five-month-old baby, but I haven't been around other children, so older, dog-savvy kids would be best. I've only met other dogs when boarding, and they said I did well, but I haven't lived with them. I'm not a fan of cats. I'm a playful, smart boy who loves my toys, knows commands like "sit," "speak," and "shake," and I truly want to please. My anxiety can show up as being protective, sometimes leading to barking or growling at strangers. Crates scare me, and I do best when I have access to just one room when I'm alone, with my family even using a baby monitor to help me feel secure. Since the baby arrived, I've been more stressed and sometimes get into things when I'm feeling overwhelmed. My family knows I need more time, structure, and confidence than they can currently provide, and they're committed to finding me the perfect home.

Ideal Home

I'm looking for a home with an experienced dog owner who is patient, steady, and confident. Someone who understands fear-based behaviors and can set clear boundaries with kindness. I'm not the best fit for a timid handler or a first-time dog owner. A household without young children under 14 years of age would be ideal for me. I'm not good with cats.

Ongoing Health

I am neutered and currently on Reconcile to help manage my anxiety.

Training & Support

I can be protective of my person and may bark or growl at strangers. The crate scares me. When I'm left alone, I do best when I have access to just one room. I've had a single bite incident when my owner was pulling me away from the screen door as I was barking at the mailman, and I turned and bit her hand. I would do best in a home that will provide me with training to teach me that I can relax around strangers and do not need to defend the household.
