About Panni - Special Needs
Panni - Please be sure to read Medical Notes below.
A 3 1/3 year old girl who is truly lovely - her momma's family raves about her - she's calm, happy to be a lap dog, but can also be playful.
Her mom's daughter reached out to Paws New England because her elderly mom was unable to properly care for Panni (see below re: IMHA). She has required medications for her IMHA condition, and it was not always possible for her mom to remember to give the medications.
Panni just arrived at our foster home today, and so far she's doing quite well - obviously a little confused, so we will be watching her for the next week or so to get a real feeling for her personality and needs.
She's ignoring the cat (who almost looks to be her size) and is doing quite well with the other dogs in the home.
She'd be an amazing friend for someone who likes a dog on their lap!!
If you think you may be interested in this adorable fluff ball, feel free to apply now, and as we learn more about her, we can most certainly keep you updated.
Medical Note for Panni: IMHA
UPDATE Panni is making improvements on a new medication regimen for her IMHA. Her skin still has some considerable symptoms, but this disease often makes things look worse before better.
Panni has a condition called immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). The good news is that she has responded remarkably well to treatment, which consists of two pills twice a day. The vet is currently weaning her off this medication, as she is doing so well.
IMHA is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks its own red blood cells. While this is a serious diagnosis, many dogs go on to live happy, full lives after treatment. There is a small chance (about 10-15%) that it could return, so her future family should be attentive to any changes and seek veterinary care right away if concerns arise.
Panni is feeling great right now and is ready to enjoy life in a loving, committed home that understands her medical history and will continue to monitor her health.
