About Flora

Flora, a 3-year-old spayed female Carolina Dog mix weighing 46 pounds, is a playful and energetic girl looking for her forever home! Affectionately known as Flora, Flory, Lory, or Sweetpea, she absolutely adores wrestling and being chased. She's a social butterfly with other dogs, enjoying playful interactions and even giving her foster sibling, Furman, lots of face licks. Flora has experience playing with dogs of various sizes, from a 35-pound Cocker Spaniel to a 60-pound Pyrenees mix, and would do best with a dog of similar size and energy level. While she's a love bug who enjoys snuggling, Flora can be a bit nervous around new children and exhibits "stranger danger" when new people enter the home, especially if they move quickly. She may thrive in an adult-only household at this time. Flora is fully housebroken and doesn't have issues being out of her crate unsupervised at home, though she has shown some anxiety when crated, but does fine in boarding facilities. She is a smart girl who loves learning new tricks and is very submissive and affectionate. Flora has high energy needs and requires dedicated outdoor playtime to be happy indoors. She loves walks, sunbathing, birdwatching, and playing fetch. Though she travels well in the car, she is terrified of storms and will seek shelter. Flora is a work in progress, but she will reward you with years of love and companionship!

Ideal Home

Flora would do best in a moderately active home with regular outdoor play sessions. An owner who is often around, enjoys walks or jogs, and will play fetch with her is ideal. A home with no other pets or a well-balanced dog of similar age, size, and energy level would be perfect. She needs an owner who will continue positive reinforcement training to help her with her anxieties and leash reactivity.

Ongoing Health

Flora has shown some leash reactivity and gets easily spooked, which can manifest as raised hair, whimpering, and barking. She pulls a lot on the leash, but has made progress with positive reinforcement and minimal stimuli, doing much better in calm environments. She may do best as the only pet in the home.

Training & Support

Flora requires slow and guided introductions to other dogs. Consistent training using positive reinforcement is needed to help her with her leash skills and to build her confidence around new dogs and stimuli. She needs reminders to take treats gently. She has demonstrated some anxiety in the crate at home.
