Meet Kiko! This sweet, loving, and affectionate 9-year-old, 68 lb mixed breed boy is eager to please and easygoing. Originally from Mexico, Kiko lived a tough life on a rooftop before being rescued and brought to Canada. Despite his past, he's a resilient soul described as low-maintenance with a gentle heart. He dreams of a permanent home where he can feel a sense of belonging. Kiko's ideal day involves playing fetch, rolling in the grass, enjoying snacks, and cuddling up with his people. He walks well on a leash and enjoys sniffing during his daily walks, preferring quieter neighborhoods with fewer loud vehicles or encounters with strangers and other dogs.
Ideal Home
Kiko would thrive in a home where he is the only pet and would do best in a quiet neighborhood with a yard. He's looking for a patient family who will help build his confidence, especially with stairs, and can advocate for his space when meeting new people and dogs. He is not recommended for homes with young children due to his enjoyment of rough play.
Ongoing Health
Kiko had a growth removed from his leg that was diagnosed as cutaneous hemangiosarcoma, a malignant skin cancer. It's possible it could return, so he'll need regular monitoring. Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided on areas with lighter skin, like his belly and inner legs. Kiko is also prone to bladder stones and requires a specific brand of food. It's important to note that Kiko is not palliative; many dogs with this diagnosis live for years with a good quality of life.
Training & Support
Kiko has basic obedience skills and is very attuned to his people, eager to please. He is sensitive and observant. He needs slow and respectful introductions to new people. He is muzzle trained and will need a family committed to working on his leash etiquette, obedience training, and overall confidence. He does not enjoy being crated.
