Bear is a 10-month-old, 53-pound Labrador Retriever mix who is brimming with love, personality, and youthful exuberance. This sweet and friendly boy gets along wonderfully with dogs, cats, and children, and he truly enjoys being around everyone. Bear is happiest when he has company, whether that's his human family or canine companions. As a young Lab mix, Bear has plenty of energy and loves to run and play, so his future family should be prepared to provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. A home with another playful dog is highly preferred, or a doggy daycare would be an excellent outlet for him. Bear is house-trained but not yet crate-trained.
Ideal Home
Bear is looking for an active family that understands he's still very much a puppy at heart. Yards MUST be adequately and fully fenced; we do not accept electric or underground fences. A home with another playful dog is highly preferred, or a doggy daycare would be an excellent outlet for him to help keep him happy and engaged.
Ongoing Health
Bear is fully vetted, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and kept on heartworm and flea prevention.
Training & Support
Bear does have one challenge that his future family should be aware of: he has food-related resource guarding, due to living on the streets and going to bed hungry every night. While he is comfortable and relaxed with his trusted caregiver, he can become protective of his food around other dogs, therefore he must be fed separately. This behavior is limited to feeding situations, and he is otherwise a loving, social dog with no history of aggression toward people or animals. As we have seen with all other rescues, as they continue to receive their food on time, their tendency to resource guard their food diminishes and finally disappears. His adopters should be committed to managing feeding time appropriately and continuing positive reinforcement training to help him build confidence and trust. Bear is house-trained but he is not yet crate-trained.
