Meet Sammy J., a 12-year-old shepherd mix with the soft yellow coat of a classic ol’ yellow dog and the soul of a gentle old man. When Sammy J. first arrived at the Ranch, he was unsure and guarded — pacing the yard’s perimeter for nearly an hour, keeping his distance, and not yet ready to trust. But something magical happened once we gently guided him inside. He explored cautiously at first, then found himself next to one of our volunteers, quietly accepting the comfort of soft pets and scritches. And before long, Sammy J. stumbled upon a dog bed — not because he was looking for it, but because it stood between him and more affection. With a sigh of surrender, Sammy settled down on that bed … and didn’t want to leave. Sammy J. is a sweet, tired soul who just wants a safe place to rest his head, good company, and gentle love. Having spent much of his life outdoors, everything inside — soft bedding, loving hands, peaceful surroundings — is new and a bit overwhelming, but he’s quickly learning that he loves it. Sammy J. may just be our favorite, not because he’s flashy or outgoing, but because it feels like he needs The Ranch the most. He’s the dog who discovered, perhaps for the first time, what every senior dog deserves: a soft, safe, loving home.
