Benjie is a lovable 20-month-old Mini Schnauzer who wins the hearts of everyone he meets, both canine and human. He walks nicely on a leash, enjoys playtime with his toys, and sleeps soundly through the night for at least eight hours in his own bed. Benjie thrives best when he has the company of another dog, especially when left alone, as he enjoys their companionship. He's a playful and affectionate boy who needs some supervision during play to make sure he doesn't accidentally chew on anything he shouldn't. Despite his medical needs, Benjie is a happy, affectionate little dog who loves people and other dogs. His routine becomes second nature once established, and in return, you'll have a sweet, playful companion who will happily steal your heart.
Ideal Home
Benjie thrives best when he has the company of another dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit.
Ongoing Health
Benjie has Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), a chronic digestive condition that requires ongoing management. He is on a prescribed diet that is essential to keeping his digestive system healthy. He cannot have any other food, treats, table scraps, or chews outside of his prescribed diet, as doing so can cause digestive upset and flare-ups. He also has a condition causing occasional fecal incontinence, as his stool needs to stay soft to avoid straining after previously needing surgery to correct an issue that could recur if not carefully managed. He takes MiraLAX to help with this and usually goes potty in the morning, sometimes midday, and before bed. After his bowel movements, he often needs a quick rinse to help keep him clean. In addition, Benjie needs to have his anal glands expressed by a veterinarian approximately once a month as part of his ongoing medical care. At night, Benjie wears a reusable diaper due to occasional leaks.
Training & Support
Benjie is potty trained to go outside and prefers to poop off-leash. If he's outside and not finished, he may pull away to avoid coming back inside. Benjie is smart and will follow you or jump on you if he needs to go out. When asked about potty, he will head to the door to let you know. If left home for more than two hours, Benjie needs access to a potty pad, as his food contains a lot of water and he needs to relieve himself every 2-3 hours during the day. Many dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog.
