About Chance
A story about a rescue dog named CHANCE! From feral to shelter to being bounced around from place to place. He just wants his special furever home!
CHANCE: 4-5 year old male Basenji mix who was found living on the streets close to three years ago. He is smart, quirky, independent & highly athletic. He came into a high kill shelter as a stray, with no owner reclaiming him. He was broken, scared, hated humans and seemed feral. He was set to be put down, just to free up space. He was with one foster and made great strides. He was then adopted and returned after a year because his family moved and didn't take him. Chance is currently with an amazing permanent foster and setting him up for success for his special furever family.
At first, Chance didn't allow anyone to pet him and he hasn't really had a leash on him in 2 years. He had one on and he chewed it off. He has made INCREDIBLE progress in his current foster home, where he's been at for less than 3 months. He now asks for cuddles daily and receives human-initiated contact sporadically. Every day, he gets more trusting and playful. He is a very courageous boy, but still, no leash yet.
Chance is a low to high energy dog. He didn't leave his crate for two days when he got to his current foster home; he was so scared. Turns out he can also clear a 3-4 foot barrier in one bounce, with ease, multiple times, in a row! He thankfully also demonstrates good recall to his name and comes back to Chance, Chancy Boy, Chancealot, Puppy.
Chance is potty/crate trained and should be crated when no human is home. This Basenji is a booper, a nudger; it's a sophisticated language he is slowly teaching us. His moves are decisive and intrusive, just don't look at him directly with your eyeballs and you'll get a chance to witness a very funny dog. Dog friendly with proper introductions. He is known to pick a pup bestie/partner to shadow and adore. He is generally not dominant and will walk away if another dog wants his toys. His play sessions with fosters' 2-year-old Rottie-mix are getting longer and more frequent. #BasenjiLove
CHANCE can be guarded over food and is very food-motivated. He prefers to eat his food in his crate, door closed, blanket draping over the top. He is learning so much about trusting touch and teaching the fosters so much about patience and true consent. WHEN we get a leash on him, he will make a great dog for anyone wanting to try agility training and play. #TeamChance
Ideal Home
Chance will thrive in a home with other dogs, a backyard, high fences and a family that can commit to doing the work of earning his trust. He's a loyal companion that is ready to be loved unconditionally.
Ongoing Health
No specific health concerns mentioned.
Training & Support
Chance needs continued work on leash training and building trust around touch. He is potty and crate trained and has good recall. He can be guarded over food and prefers to eat in his crate with the door closed.
