Dempie

Dempster is a sweet, timid boy who is blossoming in foster care! He arrived in January and has made incredible progress in building his confidence. While he was once very shy, he's now starting to seek out affection and enjoys being petted. He's learned that human attention can be quite nice, especially around other dogs. Dempster is a mix of 86% Beagle, 6% Basset, and 6% Labrador. He has a longer body reminiscent of a Basset Hound, but his bark is all Beagle! He was unfortunately abandoned along with his companions, Arnold and Queenie, after their owner passed away. They are all safe in the Chicago area after a transport from Memphis. Dempster is doing well with his heartworm slow-kill treatment.

Ideal Home

Dempster would thrive in a patient and loving home where he can continue to learn to trust. A home with a playful, confident, and well-socialized dog would be ideal to help him feel secure and learn from their interactions.

Ongoing Health

Dempster tested positive for heartworms and is undergoing a slow-kill treatment plan. He may also have tick-borne diseases.

Training & Support

Dempster is mostly housetrained and feels safe in a crate. He benefits greatly from gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement, especially when using treats. He needs continued interaction and cuddles to build his confidence.
