About Dutchess

Dutchess is a special girl looking for a special family.

She isn't the right fit for a first-time dog owner. She's not your hiking partner, running companion, or rough-and-tumble playmate. She's not the dog for energetic children to grow up with.

What she is though, is a loving, loyal companion who needs a calm home, gentle walks, light play, and an owner committed to her lifelong medical care. Weighs about 50 pounds and only 2 years old.

Dutchess was found living under a house with her litter of puppies. Despite everything she had endured, she was an incredible mother who safely delivered and cared for all of her babies. Every one of her puppies was healthy and has since found a forever home.

Sadly, at some point before coming into rescue, someone shot Dutchess with what is believed to have been buckshot. The wounds had healed by the time she entered SPR's care, so the underlying damage wasn't immediately apparent.

Not long after arriving in foster care, Dutchess began showing signs that something wasn't right. She lost interest in activities she normally enjoyed, and on the first warm day of the season, she developed a noticeable limp. A veterinary visit revealed devastating news: internal infection and lead fragments throughout parts of her body.

After multiple rounds of antibiotics and ongoing medical treatment, Dutchess continues to battle the lasting effects of her injuries. But don't let that make you too sad--because it certainly doesn't stop Dutchess.

Despite everything she has been through, Dutchess remains incredibly loving. With patience, care, and lots of affection, she continues to learn that humans can be trusted. The right combination of medication, supplements, and veterinary care has helped her feel more comfortable and enjoy life again.

And yes--there's definitely some Husky in her! You'll know it quickly because Dutchess has plenty to say. Every morning comes with a loud and enthusiastic conversation that your neighbors may occasionally get to enjoy as well.

Dutchess has shown kindness to every dog, cat, human, chicken, duck, and other animal she has met. It's truly remarkable to see a dog who has experienced such cruelty still have so much love to give.

Upon approval of an adoption application, we will gladly discuss Dutchess's complete medical history, current treatment plan (around $30 a month), and ongoing care needs.

If you have room in your heart and home for a gentle soul who deserves a second chance, and you are prepared to take on her medical needs, please apply today at SandiPaws.org. Let's help this sweet girl finally find the forever home she deserves.
