About Spike

Meet Spike — a 9-year-old Shepherd mix with a heart as big as his personality! At 66 pounds, he has the energy of a pup and the shape of a Butterball turkey—handsome, round, and impossible not to love. Spike came to us as part of a large group of dogs who were surrendered when their caregiver could no longer provide for them. And even after all he’s been through, this guy’s zest for life is still going strong. Spike is incredibly people-oriented and shines brightest when he’s with those he trusts. He absolutely adores kids and is happiest going on walks, exploring the play yard, or just hanging out being your loyal shadow. He’s a great mix of affectionate and active, and once you’ve earned his trust (especially if you’re a woman—he seems to feel most at ease with the ladies), he’s all in. He’s done well with many of the dogs he’s met here, though he prefers slow introductions. With a little patience and supervision, Spike could enjoy a home with another friendly pup. He’s not a fan of cats, though, so he’ll need a feline-free home.

Ideal Home

Spike would thrive in a home that appreciates his affectionate and active nature. He adores children and would likely do well with another friendly dog, provided slow introductions are made. He needs a home without cats.

Ongoing Health

Spike has some changes to his heart likely stemming from previous heartworm disease. While his heartworm tests are now consistently negative, he has some right-sided heart enlargement and mild pulmonary changes. He’ll be starting on Vetmedin to support his heart moving forward. This doesn’t change his day-to-day fun or his joyful energy—it just means he’ll need regular vet care and a family who understands that love sometimes comes with a little extra TLC. Spike has been neutered, microchipped, and heartworm tested. He’s up to date on all vaccines, including rabies, and has been dewormed and started on flea/tick prevention.

Training & Support

Spike keeps his kennel clean, so house-training should come naturally with a little routine and reassurance. He just needs time to decompress and settle into a home where he feels safe, understood, and—most of all—loved.
