Layla is a friendly, affectionate, and loyal dog with a playful spirit, always ready for an adventure. She's a gentle companion who loves to give kisses and receive belly rubs, and she has a brave, curious, and sometimes funny side. Layla is a well-rounded dog with both athletic and couch-potato tendencies, enjoying quiet time as much as playtime. She was found as a stray in Victoria, Texas, and after being cared for by a kind elderly couple, she came to us for a temporary stay. We couldn't let her go back to living outdoors, especially since she's undergoing treatment for heartworm.
Ideal Home
Layla would thrive in a home where she can be the "Princess Layla" she is! She needs to be an indoor-only dog. While she enjoys the company of dogs and people, she is not a fan of cats. She would do best with a canine sibling to play with, as she has bonded well with Chance, who is also available for adoption. A huge, secure backyard for running and playing would be ideal.
Ongoing Health
Layla is currently being treated for strong heartworm positive. This condition can cause exhaustion, drooling, and panting, especially with exertion or high temperatures. Her outdoor walks are kept to a minimum for her safety and comfort. She has had success with indoor pee pad training. All her heartworm treatment and testing are covered until she tests negative.
Training & Support
Layla can take a little time to warm up in new environments due to her past experiences. She needs patience and understanding to decompress, which can take anywhere from 3 days to 6 months+. Her foster home has successfully introduced her to new surroundings and routines to build trust. She is crate-trained for emergencies and nighttime. She snores and whimpers in her sleep, but these are minor quirks of a dog with a heart as big as Texas.
