About Spike

Spike is a brave boy who had a tough start but is looking for his forever home. He's a loyal companion who, with patience and understanding, will blossom into a deeply affectionate dog. While his initial greetings might be a bit shy with growls and snarls, it's all rooted in fear and a desire for gentle reassurance. He thrives with a patient owner who can give him the time and space he needs to build trust.

Ideal Home

Spike is looking for a quiet, single-woman household. He does not do well with men or boys of any age and would prefer a home without other people visiting regularly, as he is a one-person kind of dog. A home that can commit to his 90-day adjustment plan will be rewarded with immense love and companionship.

Ongoing Health

Spike is a healthy boy with no known ongoing health issues.

Training & Support

Spike requires significant patience and a structured approach to build trust. He is fearful of new people and exhibits this through growling and snarling. It's crucial to follow his paced adjustment plan:

  • Day 1-30: Spike will hide and growl/snarl when you make eye contact. Continue to provide food and treats without pressure.
  • Day 31-45: He'll growl less and may approach to nudge you before retreating. Avoid direct eye contact.
  • Day 45-55: Spike may begin to snuggle under the covers on his own terms. Do not initiate touch yet.
  • Day 55-70: He may start taking treats from your hand and allow gentle head scratches. Eye contact is becoming more tolerable.
  • Day 70-90: Spike might permit being picked up (though he may vocalize) and will begin wagging his tail when he sees you. Some snuggles above the covers may occur.
  • Day 90+: With consistent patience, Spike will be a devoted companion, running for hugs and kisses. He does enjoy the company of other dogs. Once his adjustment period is complete, he's a fairly easygoing dog who loves naps and lap snuggles.
