Hema is a beautiful 3-year-old, 50lb female German Shepherd mix who came to us in rough shape. We found her by the side of the road with a severe nosebleed, and after a few days at the vet, we were able to stop the bleeding. She was also very underweight, and we suspect poor nutrition may have contributed to her condition. Hema has been with us for several years, and we've learned that her nose bleeds in hot weather or direct sunlight. She may have a genetic disorder, possibly Von Willebrand's disease. Hema is a special needs dog and requires a specific kind of home.
Ideal Home
Hema would do best in a home without children or other pets. She is also not fond of strangers and tends to bark excessively when she hears people approaching. Due to her tendency to be destructive with household items, she should not be left unsupervised. Hema also enjoys digging and can jump fences, so a large, high fence is essential. She can also experience separation anxiety if left alone for too long.
Ongoing Health
Hema's primary ongoing health concern is her tendency to have nosebleeds in hot weather or direct sunlight. She may have Von Willebrand's disease. She also has skin issues that require daily care due to shedding.
Training & Support
Hema may have accidents in the home and needs to be closely monitored and taken outside regularly for bathroom breaks. Because she can be destructive, it's best to prevent her from having unsupervised access to household items. Her digging and fence-jumping behaviors mean she needs a secure outdoor space.
