Holt is a 5-month-old Border Collie/Great Pyrenees mix with a sweet face, a good brain, and the excellent temperament of a puppy who is ready to be someone's very best idea. He is friendly, social, smart, and an all-around excellent young dog. Holt likes people, enjoys other dogs, he is fine with cats, and he is doing a very nice job at the whole puppy thing. He is still a baby, so he will need the usual puppy basics: structure, training, patience, supervision, and a family willing to help him grow into the wonderful adult dog he is clearly capable of becoming.
Ideal Home
Because he is a young, active mix of two intelligent breeds, Holt needs a fenced yard where he can run, play, explore, and burn off his puppy energy safely. He will do best with a family that enjoys a bright, engaged dog and understands that smart puppies are always learning, including the things no one technically meant to teach them.

He will need a family that understands that smart puppies are always learning. Homes considering adopting a puppy must be prepared for: flexible schedules for potty training, crate training until the puppy is at least one year old to prevent chewing on inappropriate things when you can't supervise, socialization, and understanding that puppy behavior and life stages are equivalent to a human toddler. It takes at least a full year to have a calmer, well-adjusted dog. Patience is required and when your dog's behavior is a positive experience for you and those around you, your patience will be rewarded ten-fold, for years to come. Please do not consider adopting a puppy if you have not thoroughly thought through the pros and cons of having one. So many people end up returning them after 3-5 months because they didn't realize the amount of work involved in raising a puppy. Patience, appropriate toys, socialization, and obedience training are all musts. All are time-consuming and can be expensive. All dogs require supervision with children and obedience training. Adopters that want to have good dogs must be prepared to put the time and effort into training a dog. Any dog requires work and effort, but a well-trained, well-socialized dog is more than worth the effort to get them there.
