Luke is a handsome 7-year-old standard-sized dachshund with a smooth, red coat. He came to us from Tennessee, where he was an owner surrender. His former elderly owner allowed him to run the household, which led to some guarding habits. While he has made great progress with professional training and has learned valuable commands like "leave it," he will need an experienced dachshund owner who can continue his training and provide a structured environment. Luke is house-trained, crate-trained, and leash-trained. He enjoys his daily walks and still has a playful spirit, even at his age. He's also a snuggler and loves attention when it's offered!
Ideal Home
Luke would thrive in a quieter home with few visitors. He needs a fenced yard to safely enjoy his zoomies and outdoor time. He can be an only dog or live with another small, adult dog, either male or female. He should only live with adult children, 14 years or older. He is not a candidate for apartments, high-rises, or condos.
Ongoing Health
Luke arrived at the rescue a bit overweight and may need to lose another pound or two after adoption. He does not like going to the vet for nail trims, and a muzzle must be used during these visits.
Training & Support
Luke has undergone professional training and has made tremendous progress with his guarding tendencies, particularly learning the "leave it" command. He will require continued reinforcement of these commands from his new family. He can be a bit nippy with larger dogs when they are playing or highly aroused, so he stays on leash during walks and is learning to observe from a distance. He also doesn't care for strangers, so new people entering the home should be aware and not approach him immediately. His adopter must speak with his trainer to learn how to continue his commands.
