Gandalf

Gandalf is a 3-year-old, 57 lb Shepherd mix who was found as a stray and caught using a dog trap. He's quite shut down in the shelter environment, so he'll need an experienced and patient handler to help him decompress and come out of his shell. Gandalf tolerates gentle petting on his head but shows limited social skills with people and appears undersocialized and a flight risk. Leash walking is currently very uncomfortable for him; he will resist, yelp, and attempt to hide. He did enjoy spending time in the yard (on leash) and tolerated people being present, even taking treats gently from a handler. Gandalf tested well with another male dog named Coffee, and while he initially growled at an energetic female dog named River, he was eventually able to coexist with her. Any future introductions to other dogs should be slow and supervised. When returning to his kennel, Gandalf walked inside on his own to hide and allowed staff to remove his leash without issue.

Gandalf would do best in a home with an experienced and patient handler who can help him build confidence.

Gandalf is up to date on vaccinations.

Training & Support

Gandalf needs significant support with leash walking, as he currently finds it very uncomfortable. He also appears undersocialized and has limited social skills with people, so ongoing positive reinforcement and socialization efforts will be crucial.
