About DOC
Meet Doc!
Doc is an adorable 8-year-old, 5-pound Affenpinscher mix looking for a patient, loving forever home. After suffering an eye injury that led to glaucoma, his painful eye was removed, and he also had a dental cleaning. Hes now feeling great and is ready for his next chapter!
A little about Doc...
Like many Affenpinschers, Doc is full of confidence and a little bit of spice! He doesnt give his heart away immediately, but once youve earned his trust, he absolutely ADORES his person. Sometimes a few tasty treats help speed up the friendship process!
Because of his limited vision and independent personality, Doc doesnt enjoy being grabbed or handled unexpectedly. We recommend a home with children 12 years and older who understand how to respect a dogs space. Every family is different, though, and were happy to discuss the right fit.
House Training
Doc is making wonderful progress with house training but isnt quite perfect yet. He currently wears a belly band while indoors, as he may have the occasional accident if his cues to go outside are missed. We believe he was previously trained to use pee pads because he was initially reluctant to walk on grass. Thankfully, hes become much more comfortable outdoors and continues to improve every day.
Hes very reliable about doing his business outsideprovided he gets there in time! If he has to wait too long, hell choose his own spot indoors. Weve found he does best with a predictable routine and supervised freedom while hes still learning.
Crate Training
We gave crate training an honest try, but Doc made it very clear that it wasnt for him. After several attempts that ended with hours of barking and whining, we decided it simply wasnt the right fit.
Daily Life
Docs favorite place is perched on the back of the couch where he can keep an eye on everything happening around him. Hes extremely food motivated, which makes training easier, and hes already making great progress with not begging or barking during meals.
Hes affectionatebut on his own terms. Once he feels safe, hell happily curl up beside you for scratches, belly rubs, and cuddles. Hes very much a shadow dog who wants to stay close to his chosen person. Occasionally hell give a protective little growl if someone approaches unexpectedly, but he has never bitten anyone.
Other Pets
Doc peacefully coexists with other dogs but isnt interested in playing. If another dog gets too close, hell simply let them know hed prefer some space and move somewhere quieter.
Because of his limited vision, Doc startles easily and may react defensively when surprised. A calm, predictable environment helps him feel secure.
The Perfect Home
Every day we see more of Docs sweet personality emerge. Beneath his cautious exterior is a gentle little dog who truly wants love and companionship.
Doc would thrive in a quiet home where someone is home most of the time. He loves simply being near his person and is happiest when life is calm, steady, and predictable. Hell need an adopter with patience, understanding, and a gentle approach while he learns to trust.
If you have experience with shy or sensitive dogsor simply have the time and heart to let one blossom at his own paceDoc will reward you with unwavering loyalty and devoted companionship. He may make you wait a little for his trust, but once you have it, youll have a best friend for life.
