About Theresa
Meet Theresa!
This little lady is a pint-sized protector with a heart full of cuddles. Theresa is an approximately 2-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix who believes her primary job is to be your loyal guardian. She's a master of snuggles, and if you dare to stop petting her too soon, she'll gently remind you with a paw to keep those scritches coming. Her life's mission? Cuddles, protection, and a repeat of both!
Theresa came to us from a shelter where the noise and activity made her feel scared, shy, and defensive. Thankfully, a compassionate staff member saw past her initial facade and quickly earned her trust. That employee's advocacy allowed this sweet girl to leave the shelter and find her way to us, ready for a loving home.
When she's not busy guarding you, Theresa is an absolute shadow. She'll follow you from room to room, but she's not overbearing. When you sit down, she'll happily curl up beside you, ready for a nap on the couch or a cozy night in your bed.
Ideal Home
Theresa would likely do best in a home without a lot of visitors. A quiet, low-energy household would be ideal, possibly with a senior or a single individual who can give her the focused attention she craves. While she generally co-exists peacefully with other dogs, she doesn't seek out play and would likely be fine in a home without other pets if introductions are managed carefully. We are unsure how she would do with cats. Her "stranger danger" and guarding behaviors mean she needs a home that understands how to manage these quirks, perhaps by ignoring her initial barking and growling until she settles. Homes with children might be a consideration depending on the children's age and ability to respect a dog's boundaries, as she can be defensive around new children and may react to rough play.
Ongoing Health
Theresa will be spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on all her vaccines as part of her adoption. She is heartworm negative and currently on preventative medication. She has a huge appetite and can be defensive over her food, especially when in her kennel or actively eating. It is recommended to feed her in her kennel and allow her to finish without interruption.
Training & Support
Theresa is doing very well with her manners. She's great on car rides and walks well on a leash. She is crate trained and can sleep overnight in her crate, as well as endure an 8-hour workday with only minor whining if she can see you. She is also doing well with potty training, though she may give you "how dare you" looks if asked to go on wet grass. While she is generally calm, she has moments of spunky energy, often related to the excitement of seeing you. She can be prone to barking and growling at strangers, a behavior that is best managed by ignoring it until she calms down. Treats are a great motivator and can help tame her guarding behavior.
