Pearl4 (being fostered in North Carolina)

Pearl is a 6-year-old, 12 lb smooth black pure dachshund who is just discovering the joys of being a cherished family member. Lap cuddles, sofa naps, and exploring the outdoors are all new and wonderful experiences for her. She is a quiet, gentle soul who is learning to trust, play, and come out of her shell. Every small step she takes is a true gift to witness.

Ideal Home

Pearl would thrive in a home that understands her need for patience and gentle introductions. She loves to be held and sit on laps, but prefers to initiate affection rather than being picked up unexpectedly. She needs a securely fenced yard as she is a flight risk and does not yet have a reliable threshold boundary. Doors should be managed carefully. She is suitable for shared-wall living as she is quiet and calm indoors. She would also benefit from a calm, confident canine companion to help guide her in discovering the joys of dog life.

Ongoing Health

Pearl is currently being treated for a yeast and bacterial skin infection with a medicated shampoo every other day, which she tolerates well. She also requires a low-carb, low-sugar diet to manage the infection. While her current routine is working, her new family will need to continue this care regimen as she heals. She has a Grade 2 heart murmur that does not currently require medication.

Training & Support

Pearl has made great progress with potty training and is house-trained with regular walks. Her crate is her sanctuary and should be accessible at all times with the door open. She is shy and gentle when meeting new people, but blossoms with affection once she feels safe. She eats at her own quiet pace and takes treats gently.
