Bear is a 2-year-old Great Pyrenees mix with a heart of gold, though he's still learning how to navigate the world with his big paws! He came to us with some skin issues, but those have been fully resolved. Bear is a generally friendly and affectionate boy, especially with his favorite people. He gets very excited when he sees people approaching and his way of showing it is by jumping and mouthing. He's learning to settle down before getting attention, but at 140 lbs, it can be a bit overwhelming! Bear loves to be the center of attention and sometimes wants to keep it that way by grabbing at you to prevent you from leaving. He's very treat-motivated! As is typical for his breed, Bear can exhibit guarding behaviors, especially around his food and his space, which can be unpredictable with new people. He walks well on leash and enjoys car rides. Bear can be a bit hesitant and tense around unfamiliar things up close, but he generally settles down quickly with distraction. He seems indifferent to other dogs unless they are reactive towards him, in which case he'll match their energy briefly before disengaging. He's done well on calm pack walks and has shown interest in playing with calm dogs. Bear is happiest when he's relaxing on the couch!
Ideal Home
Bear needs an experienced owner who has worked with large, dominant dog breeds. He thrives with a consistent and strong presence that reinforces positive behaviors through training. Patience is key as he learns to trust his new environment and boundaries. A quiet lifestyle and someone who works from home or is retired would be ideal. Bear does best with consistent people in his life; while he enjoys meeting new people, too much traffic with strangers can trigger his guarding instincts. He absolutely must have a fenced-in yard and would benefit from a large property, preferably in the country, with access to both indoor and outdoor living spaces with suitable shelter. Bear is not suited for a home with children due to his food aggression.
Ongoing Health
Bear initially presented with dermatitis, which has been completely resolved.
Training & Support
Bear can be overly enthusiastic and may jump or mouth when excited, though he is learning to manage this. His guarding tendencies, especially with food, require careful management and consistent training. He pulls on the leash occasionally when he sees something interesting.
