About Owen

Owen is a handsome 53lb hound with a sleek cream coat, accented with tan spots around his hips, the base of his tail, and his face and ears. He was born around 2015 and arrived at our rescue on September 9, 2017, after being pulled from a high-kill shelter where he had been taken in as a stray but could not be kept long-term. Owen is a jolly, happy dog who absolutely loves to play, especially with toys! He's a big fan of tough toys that can withstand his enthusiastic chewing, and he's especially delighted by toys with squeakers. He's also treat-motivated, which makes training a breeze, and he's already mastered the "sit" command. Owen can be strong and eager when he first heads out for a walk, but once he burns off some energy, he's a model walker. He gets incredibly excited when he sees volunteers, knowing it means a walk or playtime in the arena, where he's a beautiful sight to behold! He can be a bit overzealous when meeting other dogs, but with consistent training, he can learn to make more polite introductions. Owen has a limited range of motion in his left hip due to an old injury, and he takes daily medication to manage any discomfort, though it certainly doesn't slow down his playful spirit.

Ideal Home

Owen would thrive in a home with plenty of sturdy toys, as he enjoys entertaining himself for long periods by carrying, throwing, and playing with them. He'd love an owner who has ample time for play and understands the importance of structure and routine. He's a bit reactive towards unfamiliar dogs and loud noises. While he can get along with other dogs after proper introductions, he views cats as playthings, so a cat-free home is best. Introducing him to many new things at once can be overwhelming, so a simpler, more predictable environment would be ideal. Owen would do well with children aged elementary school and older. He would also love his own designated digging area, perhaps a sandbox!

Ongoing Health

Owen has limited range of motion in his left hip, likely from an old, untreated injury. He is managed with daily medication for pain, though this does not impede his active lifestyle.

Training & Support

Owen can be strong and excitable when starting out on walks, but he becomes a model walker after he's had a chance to burn off some energy. He is treat-motivated and has mastered the "sit" command. He can be a little reactive towards new dogs and loud noises, and training will help him with polite introductions. A session or two with a trainer would be beneficial to help him channel his energy effectively. Owen is also quite cunning and has a knack for hiding his prized possessions, which can make retrieving toys a game of negotiation!
