Taki

Taki is an 11-year-old, 43-pound gentleman who is proving that it's never too late for a fresh start! Taki spent the first 11 years of his life in a backyard with over 30 other dogs. When his caretaker became ill, Taki's whole world changed overnight. Suddenly, he was introduced to a house, soft beds, the sounds of a television, ceiling fans, car rides, leashes, routines, and most importantly, people who wanted to shower him with love. Despite how scary this must have been, Taki has blossomed into one of the gentlest, sweetest souls you'll ever meet. He approaches everything with an innocence and wonder, as if discovering the world for the very first time.

Taki is house-trained and crate-trained. His crate is his safe space where he can relax and decompress, and he'll need a home that respects this. As his confidence has grown, so has his personality! He greets his foster parents with a happy tippy-tappy dance every morning and when they return home. Mealtimes are a highlight of his day, and he gets adorably excited when it's time to eat. Taki absolutely loves being outside, whether he's soaking up the sun or enjoying a leisurely stroll, he's happiest when he can quietly explore the world by your side. He walks nicely on leash and makes a wonderful companion for adventures.

The biggest transformation has been watching Taki learn that affection is safe. Through "consent petting," he now happily approaches his people to ask for pets, showers them with sweet kisses, and leans in for reassurance. If he's had enough, he'll simply wander away, but he often returns for more! While he may briefly greet new people with gentle face scratches, his deepest affections are reserved for those he trusts. Being chosen by Taki is a truly special experience. He is wonderfully treat-motivated, especially for yogurt sticks or Pupperoni, and always takes his treats ever so gently.

Taki is a quiet, low-energy companion who enjoys relaxing. He has become increasingly curious as he's settled in, and while he has occasionally investigated the trash or picked up something he shouldn't when unsupervised, these instances are rare and don't happen when his people are around. He's a good traveler in the car and has been non-reactive towards the cats in his foster home during slow introductions.

Ideal Home

Taki would do best in a calm home with patient adopters who understand he is still building confidence. A confident, relaxed canine companion could help show him the ropes, but he may also be happy as an only dog with people willing to let him blossom at his own pace. He would be happiest in a home without children or dog-savvy teens (15+). Taki can jump a 4-foot fence, so if his new home has a fenced yard, he will need supervision outside during his first few weeks while he settles in and learns this is his safe home.
