Mr. Darcy (MD)

Mr. Darcy is a 10-year-old, 21 lb male standard dachshund with a smooth red coat. He came to us when his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He is a sweet boy who favors women but is learning that his foster dad can be a good buddy. He enjoys car rides and walks well on a leash. He is energetic and happy, and his recent weight loss has given him new pep! He loves to sleep in the big bed. He takes time to warm up but is a sweet, snuggly guy once he lets his guard down. He really needs an adopter with a big heart to give him a chance.

Ideal Home

Mr. Darcy needs a quiet home with an adopter who is home a lot. He must have a securely fenced yard. He cannot live with cats or children. He can live with an older dog buddy if the adopter spends a lot of time at home, but it's not required.

Ongoing Health

Mr. Darcy recently had bladder stone surgery. The stone analysis indicated that the type of stone he had will recur. He will need to be kept on a prescription urinary care dog food, with extra water added to his diet. Regular x-rays and urinalysis will be necessary to detect stones early. If caught when small, they can be flushed out, avoiding surgery.

Training & Support

Mr. Darcy needs help with housetraining and requires a very patient adopter experienced with dachshunds who is willing to train him like a puppy. He is currently on a diet and has lost eight pounds, but still needs to lose more. Any adopter will need a history of keeping their dogs slim and trim.

Transporation

Mr. Darcy is being fostered in Maryland. Local adopters will be given preference to facilitate a home visit. Applicants must be willing to drive to Ellicott City, Maryland (10 miles south of Baltimore) to meet and adopt him.
